Where to buy bird seed
- I buy Cardinal Blend (or Cardinal Mix, can't remember the correct name) in 25 pound bags from Athens Seed in Watkinsville.
It's a mix of the small sunflower seeds, sunflower and safflower meats, peanuts
Sandy Creek Nature Center has a fundraiser birdseed sale in October and while it's maybe not the cheapest at least it's for a good cause.
Several responses say Athens Feed and Seed is the best buy.
And one of our bird experts Kelly writes:The feed and seed stores like Athens Feed and Seed in Watkinsville have the best deals since you
can buy in bulk - 50 pound bags. If you do buy in bulk, also purchase a large garbage bin with a lid to store the seed in so it won't
get damp or buggy, and it won't attract mice or chipmunks. If you want to attract the most birds with the least amount of effort, just
buy black oil sunflower. Adding white proso millet will attract more of the ground-feeding sparrows, and adding suet cakes will make
the woodpeckers very happy, and also attract some of the insect-eating birds like pine warblers and ruby-crowned kinglets. American
goldfinches will happily eat sunflower seeds, but they go crazy over thistle seed hung in those mesh sock feeders. Don't forget to offer
fresh water too!
