A couple weeks ago I requested recommendations for mechanics who work on VWs.
We called the last three for estimates on the timing belt, and they all came in right around the dealer's
Below is the list of only those that got multiple recommendations.
AutoTech: We agree that these guys are top-notch, and have taken our Toyotas to them for years,
but they only work on Japanese imports, unfortunately.

price of $1200. Athens Import actually quoted a slightly higher price. The other two were $70 (5 Star)
to $100 (Joe's) lower, but the dealer offers a 12-month warranty on the work, which no one else does.
Given the critical nature of the timing belt, we're willing to pay a little extra for the warranty.
That being said, 5 Star sounded the most knowledgeable about Passats; Joe's Garage was very clearly the least
knowledgeable, at least when it comes to timing belts. So for other repairs and maintenance in the future,
and the tires, we will very likely go with 5 Star.
