OB-GYN on HOM
I did a search for GYNs on the BCBS HMO site, and these were the only four doctors that came up.
I think it is because I did not include OB in the search. For the record, BCBS lists all four
of these doctors as currently taking new patients. Not sure if BCBS information is accurate.
To sum up, Perry appears to be the most highly regarded. Here are the results organized by
doctor with personal info edited out to protect the innocent...
Kelley Jr, Robert E, MD
Mercer, Cynthia A, MD
Perry, Cary C, MD
Smith, James Leon, MD
DR. CARY PERRY
- …They only do GYN and not OB now. At least that the last I have heard. I used to go to them… Cary Perry is probably the
best in the group. She is very friendly and compassionate.
Cary Perry is very good. When I switched to HMO…they didn't take it and I had to switch Dr.'s. Just recently heard they
now do take HMO so I may go back.
I can't say enough about these physicians. Dr.Cary Perry is my doctor, and I love her to death…Her husband,
Greg, is also in the practice.
Cary Perry is absolutely wonderful. Me…all go to her and love her. Very efficient and extremely easy to talk to.
My gyn is Cary Perry and I love her - she's really easy to talk to & she listens. She's also very gentle. Her nurse
Mabel is great also.
I've been a patient of Dr. Cary Perry for years. She is great and actually listens to her patients, so you don't feel
like they are just trying to hurry & hustle folks in/out of the office. She'll take the time to answer any and all
questions or concerns you may have about your healthcare.
I've been going to Cary Perry since she started practicing in Athens. I love her. She is down to earth and spends a
lot of time with you. A great choice!!
Dr. Carey Perry is great. I have gone to her for years. She will listen to you.
I've been going to Cary Perry since she came to Athens Women's Clinic and I absolutely love her.
I am surprised this group now takes the HMO. Dr. Cary Perry was my former OBY-GYN, but when I switched to HMO years ago,
they wouldn't take it. So I had to change drs. and I now go to Dr. Melissa Anderson of the Women's Center of Athens.
Dr. Cary Perry was good, I just always hated how long the visit takes before you finally see a doctor. Seems like you
I go to Cary Perry and adore her.
My daughter used to go to Dr. Perry and she loved her. She had to change since they don't deliver babies anymore…
I would go to one of the women. Either Carry Perry or Cynthia Mercer. I have not gone to them but have friends who
go to them and like them.
Cary Perry is fabulous, but I'm not sure she is taking new patients.
Dr. Cary Perry is the wife of another physician in that practice (but I would not recommend him) and I have heard wonderful
things about her. I've only seen her once…A couple of years back, I heard some people say it was very hard to get in to see
her b/c she stayed so booked - guess that could be a good sign!
I have been a patient of Cary Perry's for about two years. She came highly recommended to me, and I would recommend her to others.
She's interested, involved, spends time with patients, asks questions, etc.
Dr. Cary Perry is my GYN and I love her. She's very thorough and also personable. She takes time to answer all your questions and
never seems in a rush to move on to the next patient. If it's an issue, that group no longer deliver babies unless they changed
and I didn't hear about it.
Absolutely love Cary Perry. Been with her for years. Great office staff too.
I go to Gregory Perry, Cary's husband (same practice). I've heard she's great. He's a little goofy, kind of like he's embarrassed
to be a gynecologist. FYI, on the HMO you can pick a family practitioner as your PCP and then also go to the gynecologist of your
choosing that is an HMO doc. This is what I do. That way you can pick a PCP that's easy to get an appointment with.
Cary Perry or Cindy Mercer would be good
My friend goes to Dr. Mercer and just loves her. I've considered switching to her myself.
Cynthia Mercer is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think Drs. Mercer or Peggy are good (Kelley, Mercer, and Perry were all in AWC which was sued). I don't know Dr. Leon.
Cynthia Mercer is wonderful; very thorough. I've heard good things about Cary Perry, who practices with her, as well.
Cynthia Mercer has terrible bedside manner...
Cynthia Mercer is okay, but I didn't care for her bedside manner (a little abrupt and brusque to me).
Dr. Mercer I only saw…when they have you rotate through all the doctors for your O.B. appointments. I can't give much of a
personal opinion of her for that reason, but alot of people like her.
I'm a patient of Athens' Women's Clinic, seeing Dr. Mercer, and I don't believe she's accepting new patients. But, I've heard
great things about the other doctors in her office.
Cynthia Mercer is my gynecologist. She's nice enough, I guess. Not the best doctor I've ever had, and nothing to rave about but not bad.
And she wrote me a wrong prescription last year. She said she was going to prescribe me one thing and wrote the wrong thing down, so
that was a little maddening.
I have been seeing Cynthia Mercer since 1984 and she is great!! …adore Cary Perry - so you can't go wrong with either of these.
Their office is located across the street from the Athens Regional Outpatient Building (Talmadge House) on Prince Avenue before
you get to Normaltown.
I highly recommend Dr. Kelley. I have gone to him for YEARS…He used to be with Athens Womens Clinic and when he went out on his own,
I went right with him. Hope this helps!
I have been going to Robert Kelley for almost 26 years…I think that he is not delivering babies anymore but focuses on women and their
health problems; he is a very kind and gentle man. He is a good listener and takes his time with you. I recommend him.
I don't know about the other doctors but I go to Dr. Kelley, he's very nice and professional. Seems to have a lot of patients though
so I always schedule appointments as early in the morning as possible.
I don't care for Dr. Kelley, but that is probably just me.
Dr. Kelly is a good doctor and has been in practice for years and years…The one thing I'll say about him (and I've heard this from
so many others as well) is that he is a very tall big-boned man so to be quite frank, he has huge hands! I know that sounds kinda
weird to say, but considering he's a gynecologist....just thought it worth mentioning if you know what I mean. :-)
I've been with Leon Smith since 1995 and I've no complaints. I'm just hoping he doesn't retire any time soon, but I think he's been
Is James Leon actually James Leon Smith, by any chance? If so, all of these physicians used to be with Athens Womens Clinic before
the practice stopped doing obstetrics. At that time, Dr. Kelly went out on his own. As far as I know, the other three are still
in the same practice, just only doing gynecology. If Leon is actually Leon Smith, he was the gynecologist I saw the longest when
I was going to that practice. He is older and very grandfatherly...used to go to this same practice and didn't like him for that
reason....she said it just felt weird to her. I personally really liked him...I found…he was so caring and compassionate…(maybe
that was the grandfatherly part coming out). At any rate, I was very very happy with him. I only left his practice because…they
discontinued the obstetrics part of their practice so I found another ob/gyn in the event I decided to have more children.
Dr. Leon is my GYN doc. and he is great.
If it's Smith who is in practice in the same office as Cary Perry, I would NOT recommend him. He's rushed, doesn't seem too interested
in the patient, and he seems to have already "retired" in his mind. Just my opinion. I had to see him when Cary Perry was out,
and I was unimpressed.
Don't know any of 'em but Kevin O'Neal is also on the HMO and he's pretty awesome.
